Memorial Day Parade

Today is Memorial Day. I join with all Americans of every political persuasion in honoring the sacrifice of our fallen heroes, who gave their lives in service to our country.

This is a bitter holiday for all of us who perceive (and are willing to admit, a much smaller group) that this deadly and protracted war in Iraq was not necessary, was not properly planned, has alienated our allies, has made our country less safe, and is not likely to result in a stable country of Iraq, much less a stable Middle East. We support and honor our troops, and pray for their safety and their quick return, and we also pray for a speedy end to this travesty of a war.

Today I marched in a Memorial Day Parade in University Heights, Ohio. I wore a Sherrod Brown tee shirt and a straw hat and walked with one of my dogs, the real yellow dog Sammy, who wore a red bandana with a Sherrod Brown sticker on it. We accompanied a car festooned with Sherrod Brown signs. We handed out Sherrod Brown stickers, tossed candy to children, and waved. Quite a few people cheered and applauded specifically for Sherrod. I was giving stickers mainly to kids, but a tall white-haired man asked for one. I said "Voting for Sherrod?" and he gave me a funny sideways look. "I've got a brain," he replied.

The Strickland people had a terrific banner, and lots of volunteers, even with other parades going on in other locations at the same time. It seemed like a lot of people along the street called out to them, saying things like "Go, Ted!," "He's our guy!" and in one instance "Better than what we got now, that's for sure!"

Stephanie Tubbs Jones was represented by three supporters and a decorated car. I thought I caught a glimpse of her later in a different car, which was following along after the parade, so perhaps she arrived a little late. The man on the right is Chris Nance, a Tubbs Jones aide. A Strickland guy came over before the parade and asked Nance if he could put a Strickland sticker on their car. He said, "No, we can't do that." I asked him later if there were any developments that he could tell me about as a result of the meeting on Friday between Strickland, Tubbs Jones, and Arnold Pinkney. He said no, but discussions are continuing.

This is former representative Barbara Boyd, who is running for her old 9th District seat, in her brother's black Corvette. She usually drives a big red minivan. "You get more respect in a Corvette," she said.

Boyd is running against Rev. Jimmie Hicks Jr, a long time Democrat and Cleveland Heights city council member who is running as a Republican. You can see for yourself how many times it says "Republican" on his sign.

Suzanne Bretz Blum, running for Common Pleas Judge, posed with members of Team Blum while they were getting everything ready.

Unfortunately, it was very hot and during the parade Sammy began to suffer too much to continue. So, I had to leave the parade about half way through and take the poor pup home, where he recovered quickly and is doing fine.

Ted Strickland is goign to be elected governor and he will receive an overwhelming majority of African-American votes, with or without the support of Stephanie Tubbs Jones. African-Americans outside of Cleveland likely have not even heard of her.

Strickland needs to stop begging Jones for her support. He risks alienating a lot of moderate and independent voters who would be likely to vote for him. I remember in 1990, an article that Joel Hallet wrote about the campaign for governor of Tony Celebreeze and some things he needed to do to make a race out of it...one was to tell Cleveland Mayor Mike White to go pound sand as he was pulling a Tubbs Jones and withholding an endorsement. Strickland should do the same. He needs to have a Sister Souljah moment with her that helped Clinton so much in 92.

Jones once ran for State Supreme Court. If she wants to run again statewide and this time win, she needs Strickland much more than he needs her.

This is one democrat who is tired of Jones. Three words for her.... GET OVER IT!

What time was this parade? I thought it was around ten also which makes me wonder how Suzanne Bretz Blum managed to be in two places at once. I saw her with my own eyes in the Shaker parade! Has she cloned herself? We had a good contingent in Shaker. I had my huge green Strickland-Fusher button from the St. Patrick's Day parade, which I'll keep recycling because I won't wear a t-shirt until they get fitted girlie smalls that look halfway decent.

LOL to Jimmie Hicks.

We had one guy hiss at us when we went by, and there was another guy who some people thought was shouting "No taxes" but it sounded to me like "Go Texas." (There were a couple of people in our group wearing University of Texas cowboy hats.)

I don't see how continuing, private discussions amount to "begging' that is going to "alienate' moderate and independent voters who have no idea this issue even exists. The "Sister Souljah moment" was one of the most embarassing mments of Clinton's campaign.

The University Heights parade was supposed to start at 11:00 but didn't get going until 11:20 or later ... Suzanne Bretz Blum could have rushed over from the other parade. Maybe that was the deal with STJ as well!

On Memorial Day, a dem state senate candidate showed up on my front porch campaigning- Emily Kreider. She's going after the seat for the eastern side of metro Columbus The temp was 90, but it didn't seem to make a difference for her. She mentioned your blog specifically when I asked her about an online presence, so I thought you'd like to know- she's still going strong.

While I too am tired of STJ's obstinance, that is no reason for Strickland not to continue PRIVATE negotiations--which most people, as anon 3 pointed out, are not aware of.

As someone unfamiliar with Clinton's '92 campaign (I only turned 7 in October of that year), could someone explain who or what Sister Souljah is ?

Here's what the WIkipedia has to say:

Sister Souljah moment
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

In United States politics, a Sister Souljah moment is a politician's public repudiation of an allegedly extremist person, statement, or position perceived to have some association with the politician. Whether sincere or not, such an act of repudiation can appeal to centrist voters at the risk of alienating some of the politician's allies.
[edit]

Origins

The term originates in the 1992 presidential candidacy of Bill Clinton. In an interview conducted May 13, 1992, the hip-hop MC, author, and political activist Sister Souljah was quoted in the Washington Post as saying,

"If Black people kill Black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?"

The remark was part of a longer response to the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The quote was later reproduced without its context and widely criticized in the media (see echo chamber).

In June 1992, Clinton responded to the quote, saying,

"If you took the words ‘white’ and ‘black’ and you reversed them, you might think David Duke was giving that speech."

Clinton thereby repudiated the “extremist” position that Souljah's quotation represented.

Clinton's response was criticized by members and leaders of the Democratic Party's African-American base, such as Jesse Jackson. However, it also produced the image, in the eyes of moderate and independent voters—particularly white voters—of a centrist politician who was “tough on crime” and “not influenced by special interests.” Since moderates and independents represent swing votes, whereas the party base will not usually leave for the other party, Clinton's condemnation probably won him more votes than he lost.

It was fun, but the part about Sammy was really sad. He started dragging me off the pavement and onto the shady treelawn, and eventually plopped down right in front of this entire family, sitting on lawn chairs, and resisted getting up. After a little rest he did get up, but I took that as a sign that this parade was over, at least as far as the two of us were concerned.

That's a hilarious story about carrying the 110 lb dog. Sam is about 70 lbs and he's about all I can manage to lift. Stella is only 30 lbs so I can still fling her about.
